The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has released N1.749 billion to Bayero University, Kano (BUK), to cover institutional charges for 14,990 undergraduate students under the 2025/2026 student loan scheme.

The university confirmed receiving the funds in two batches, with the payments providing financial support for eligible students enrolled at the institution.

The latest disbursement adds to the expanding reach of the federal student loan programme, which was established to ease the financial burden of tertiary education and enable more students to remain in school despite rising education and living costs.

NELFUND’s wider disbursement figures show that the scheme has continued to attract substantial demand since the launch of its student loan portal in May 2024. As of September 3, the agency had processed more than 1.65 million applications and disbursed N355.87 billion in institutional fees and student upkeep allowances.

The BUK payment highlights the scale of funding required to support students across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, while also placing greater emphasis on the ability of the loan programme to sustain timely payments to beneficiary institutions.
