Airbus Investigates A321neo Quality Flaw as Repair Plan Limits Disruption

Airbus is investigating a quality problem affecting about 500 A321neo aircraft, while a new repair plan is expected to reduce disruption for airlines operating or awaiting delivery of the popular narrow-body jets.

The issue involves protective primer missing from strengthening rods, known as stringers, in a section of the aircraft’s forward fuselage. Airbus said the problem does not affect flight safety, but the absence of the protective coating could allow corrosion to develop over time.

Airbus and Italy’s Leonardo are investigating the source of the defect at a coatings supplier in southern Italy. About 250 affected aircraft are at different stages of production, while others are already in airline service.

Under the repair plan, airlines receiving affected aircraft will have two years to complete the required work, instead of the normal four-year maintenance cycle. The repair is expected to take up to nine days, with the core work requiring about two to three days.

The latest issue adds pressure to Airbus’ supply chain and production operations, after other quality-related problems affected deliveries of its aircraft. However, the company has reaffirmed its 2026 delivery target, while efforts continue to resolve the latest manufacturing defect.
