Yemen Fighting Forces Children Out of School as Displacement Surges

Renewed fighting in Yemen is forcing families from their homes and pushing children out of school as the country’s long-running conflict enters a new and more dangerous phase.

More than 130,000 people have been displaced by the latest escalation, with fighting between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni government troops spreading through parts of Taiz and along the Red Sea coast. The violence has ended years of relative calm following a UN-mediated ceasefire in 2022.

Among those affected is 13-year-old Muneer Farie, whose family fled their village in Taiz after clashes reached their community. Now living in a displacement camp, Muneer has stopped attending school and sells socks and other inexpensive goods to help his family survive.

His experience reflects a wider education crisis. More than 3.2 million Yemeni children had already seen their schooling disrupted by the civil war before the latest escalation.

Families arriving at displacement camps are struggling to secure food, water and other basic necessities, while continued fighting is making an early return home increasingly uncertain.

The renewed conflict is also raising wider concerns over humanitarian conditions and the security of strategic Red Sea routes, adding another layer of regional and economic pressure.
