Former Guinean Prime Minister and opposition leader Sidya Toure has died in Paris at the age of 81.
Toure died on Friday, September 25, 2026, after reportedly falling ill. He had been receiving treatment at the American Hospital of Paris, according to sources close to his family cited by AFP.
Toure served as Guinea’s prime minister from July 1996 to March 1999 under then-President Lansana Conte. He later became the leader of the Union of Republican Forces, UFR, and emerged as one of the country’s prominent opposition figures.
He contested Guinea’s presidential elections in 2010 and 2015 and remained active in national politics for several decades. He had lived in exile in Ivory Coast after Guinea’s 2021 military coup.
Guinea’s Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah described Toure as a prominent figure in the country’s political life and remembered him as a pragmatic reformer.
