The Head of the Igala Community in Lagos State, Muhammad Salifu Shaibu, has been arraigned in court over the alleged defilement of a teenager in 2023.
The case followed an investigation by the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command after the family of the alleged victim reported the matter.
According to reports, the teenager was 15 years old when she was allegedly sexually assaulted in December 2023. The allegation later resulted in a pregnancy. The family claimed that the suspect initially denied responsibility but later acknowledged the pregnancy.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said Salifu was charged with defilement under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.
Salifu was arrested on September 16 by police officers from the Gender Unit, with assistance from officers of the Ogudu Police Station.
At the recent court proceeding, arguments were heard from the parties, after which the case was adjourned until November 19, 2026, for continuation of the trial.
The allegations remain before the court, and Salifu is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.
