European Union member states have agreed to release €6.6 billion ($7.5 billion) in EU funds linked to military assistance for Ukraine, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Friday, September 25.
The funding will come from the European Peace Facility, which is used by EU countries to finance military assistance to countries outside the bloc and reimburse member states for weapons and other military support they have provided.
Of the total, €900 million will be allocated to the EU’s military assistance mission for Ukraine, while another €1 billion will finance new joint procurement of military equipment.
The remaining €4.7 billion will reimburse EU member states for military assistance already provided to Ukraine. Some countries have indicated that they intend to direct their reimbursements back toward further support for Kyiv.
The decision comes as European governments continue expanding financial and military support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia. The EU has separately approved billions of euros for Ukraine’s defence needs, including air and missile defence, ammunition, drones and other military equipment.
The latest release highlights the EU’s continuing use of joint funding mechanisms to coordinate defence assistance while helping member states replenish resources committed to Ukraine.
