Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has said political differences will not damage his relationship with his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, stressing that personal bonds should remain separate from political disagreements.
Eno made the remarks while responding to questions about his relationship with Emmanuel amid differences over political developments in the state.
The governor said he continued to respect his predecessor despite their divergent political positions, maintaining that their relationship was built on a foundation that goes beyond politics.
Eno and Emmanuel were both members of the Peoples Democratic Party before Eno’s movement into the All Progressives Congress. Their political paths have since diverged, with the former governor remaining associated with the PDP.
The governor said political competition should not automatically translate into personal hostility, urging political actors to maintain civility and respect even when they disagree.
The comments come against the backdrop of growing political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with politicians across the country switching parties and repositioning their alliances.
Eno’s remarks underline the continuing personal and political ties among senior figures in Akwa Ibom politics despite changes in party affiliation and political strategy.
The governor said disagreements over politics should not erase longstanding relationships or mutual respect.
