Venice is considering extending its tourist entry fee and raising the daily charge to as much as €30 from 2027 as the city seeks to curb overtourism.
Budget and taxation councillor Michele Zuin said the current €5 to €10 fee was no longer high enough to discourage visitors during busy periods. He said the new rate would need to be agreed with the Italian government.
The entry charge, introduced in 2024 for day trippers, is applied on selected days and includes exemptions such as children under 14. Early bookings qualify for the lower rate.
In 2026, the fee operated from April 3 to July 26, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The scheme generated more than €5.2 million from nearly 680,000 tickets.
Venice has long struggled with overcrowding and population decline. City officials say the fee is intended to encourage tourists to avoid the busiest periods.
