LAGOS, Nigeria — Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has seen his estimated wealth climb to about $54 billion following fresh details contained in the filing for the planned initial public offering (IPO) of Dangote Refinery.
The filing reportedly shows that Dangote retains an 87% ownership stake in the multibillion-dollar refinery, highlighting the scale of his personal investment in one of Africa’s most ambitious industrial projects.
The development has drawn renewed attention to the value of Dangote’s assets as the refinery moves toward greater public participation through the proposed share offering.
The Dangote Refinery, located in Lagos, is one of the world’s largest single-train oil refineries and represents a major component of Dangote’s business empire. Its operations are expected to play a significant role in Nigeria’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.
The IPO is also expected to give Nigerian investors an opportunity to acquire shares in the refinery while allowing Dangote to maintain a dominant position in the company.
With an estimated 87% stake, Dangote would remain firmly in control of the refinery even after the public offering. The disclosure provides investors with greater insight into the ownership structure and the value attached to the landmark project.
The latest wealth estimate, however, should be viewed as a valuation-based figure rather than cash available to Dangote. Billionaire wealth estimates can fluctuate significantly depending on how privately held assets and companies are valued.
The proposed listing nevertheless marks a significant milestone for Dangote Refinery and could become one of the most closely watched corporate transactions in Nigeria’s capital market.
