Drama unfolded in Adamawa State after an 87 year old man allegedly attacked a judge with a cutlass, reportedly cutting both of the judge’s hands.

An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba of Korawa Village in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, has been arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court I, Yola, over the alleged attack on the Presiding Judge of Mayo-Ine Area Court, Hon. Dauda Hamman.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 31, 2026, while the judge was presiding over a case involving Garba and another man identified as Ismail Yusuf.

According to the Adamawa State Police Command, Garba allegedly attacked the judge with a cutlass during the court proceedings, repeatedly striking his hand and causing serious injuries.

Following the incident, the suspect was arrested and subsequently arraigned on a one-count charge of causing grievous hurt, contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.

When the charge was read and interpreted to him in court, Garba reportedly pleaded guilty. He was also said to have blamed the devil for his actions and expressed regret over the incident.

The court ordered that the 87-year-old defendant be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further hearing of the case.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, assured members of the public that the matter would be diligently prosecuted to ensure that justice is served.

The incident has generated concern within the legal community and among residents, given the age of the suspect and the nature of the alleged attack.

Details surrounding what led to the confrontation were still unclear at the time of filing this report. However, the incident reportedly involved the elderly man and the judge before the situation escalated into a physical attack.

The alleged use of a cutlass in the incident has raised questions about security around judicial proceedings and the need to ensure adequate protection for judges, court officials, lawyers and members of the public within court premises.

The development is also expected to attract the attention of security authorities, particularly as investigations continue to establish what triggered the confrontation and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.

Further details, including the identity of the judge, the circumstances that brought the 87 year old man before the court and whether he has been arrested or charged, were not immediately available.

Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and determine the appropriate legal action based on the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
