Kano Pillars secured their first victory under newly appointed coach Daniel Ogunmodede on Sunday after edging Niger Tornadoes 3-2 in an entertaining Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
The home side took control late in the first half when Ubong Friday broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, giving Pillars a deserved advantage.
Fabian Nworie then doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time, putting Kano Pillars in a commanding position heading into the break.
Nworie completed his brace nine minutes after the restart, scoring in the 54th minute to extend Pillars’ advantage to 3-0 and leave the visitors facing a difficult task.
Niger Tornadoes, however, refused to surrender and began their fightback in the closing stages.
Godfrey Joseph pulled one goal back for Tornadoes in the 73rd minute before substitute Wasiu Jimoh struck in the 90th minute to reduce the deficit to just one goal.
Despite the late pressure from the visitors, Kano Pillars held on to claim all three points and give Ogunmodede his first win since taking charge of the club.
The former Remo Stars coach had begun his tenure with a draw away to Kwara United in his first match at the helm.
Elsewhere in the NPFL, Nasarawa United recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Bendel Insurance, with Sam Pam scoring the decisive goal in the 55th minute.
Plateau United also secured a 1-0 win against Kwara United, Alex Aghahowa scoring the only goal of the encounter in the 29th minute.
Kun Khalifat and Barau settled for a goalless draw, with Barau maintaining their unbeaten start and moving to second place with four points from two matches.
Doma United remained top of the table after defeating Inter Lagos 1-0 in Lagos on Saturday, giving them six points from their opening two matches.
