The Nigeria Police Force has honoured 10 officers who were killed during a gun battle with suspected bandits in Kebbi State, as the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, vowed that the Force would intensify efforts to track down those responsible.
The officers were killed on August 10, 2026, during an encounter with heavily armed suspected bandits along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The police said the suspects were moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states when officers intercepted them.
Two other police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation and were taken for medical treatment. Two civilians also lost their lives in the encounter.
According to the police, 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the operation, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed. Additional security personnel were later deployed to the area to maintain security and pursue fleeing members of the criminal group.
At a memorial parade held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, August 24, IGP Disu paid tribute to the fallen officers and described their deaths as a painful loss to the police and the country.
The police chief assured the families of the deceased that the Force would continue to support them and ensure that the sacrifice made by their loved ones would not be forgotten.
Disu also vowed that the police would not be intimidated by the attack. He said the Force would continue working with the military, other security agencies, state governments and local communities to confront banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes.
He further pledged that security operatives would pursue the criminals responsible for attacks on police officers and civilians, disrupt their activities and ensure that those apprehended face justice.
The IGP urged police personnel to draw strength from the sacrifice of their colleagues and remain committed to protecting lives and property across the country.
