The White House has defended President Donald Trump’s use of mail in voting after reports that he cast his ballot by mail in Florida’s Republican primary, despite his previous criticism of the practice.
White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales said mail-in ballots should remain available for Americans who are ill, disabled, serving in the military or travelling, while arguing against universal mail in voting.
Trump, who maintains his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, primarily lives at the White House in Washington. Politico reported that local voting records showed he mailed in his ballot in Tuesday’s primary.
Trump has repeatedly pushed for tighter election rules and restrictions on mail in voting, citing concerns about fraud despite a lack of evidence supporting widespread fraud associated with the practice.
He also voted by mail in a Florida special election in March.
