Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has insisted that Julián Álvarez will remain at the Spanish club this summer, despite continued interest from Barcelona and growing speculation over the Argentine striker’s future.

Simeone made the position clear on Saturday, saying Atlético have no intention of allowing the forward to leave during the current transfer window. His comments come amid an increasingly tense transfer situation involving Álvarez, Barcelona and the Madrid club.

Álvarez has emerged as a major target for Barcelona, with the Catalan club keen to strengthen its attacking options. However, Atlético have maintained that the 26 year old striker remains an important part of their plans for the new season.

The dispute has already escalated beyond transfer negotiations. Atlético Madrid filed a complaint with FIFA last month over what the club described as an improper approach to Álvarez by Barcelona. The Spanish club has continued to maintain a firm position that the player is not available for transfer.

Álvarez joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024 and has quickly established himself as one of the club’s most important attacking players. His goals, movement and ability to operate in different attacking positions have made him a key component of Simeone’s team.

The Argentina international has reportedly scored 49 goals in two seasons with Atlético, further strengthening his importance to the club. His performances have also increased his value in the transfer market and attracted interest from several major European clubs.

Barcelona’s interest has added another dimension to the situation, particularly because the Catalan club is seeking to reinforce its squad ahead of the new campaign. However, Atlético’s refusal to negotiate has made the possibility of an immediate transfer increasingly difficult.

Simeone’s latest comments reinforce the club’s stance and indicate that Atlético are preparing to enter the new season with Álvarez as part of their attacking plans.

The manager is also expected to rely heavily on the striker as Atlético seek to compete for major domestic and European honours. Álvarez’s ability to combine finishing with movement and link up play gives Simeone additional tactical options in attack.

Despite Atlético’s position, uncertainty surrounding Álvarez’s future may continue until the transfer window closes. The striker has previously been linked with a desire for a new challenge, while Barcelona remain interested in securing his services.

Atlético, however, appear determined to retain control of the situation and prevent the forward from leaving unless their conditions are met.

The club’s firm stance could force Barcelona to explore alternative attacking targets, particularly if Atlético refuse to reconsider their position. It also means that any further development in the transfer saga could depend on whether the Catalan club is prepared to make an offer capable of changing Atlético’s position.

For Simeone, keeping Álvarez would provide continuity and preserve one of the strongest attacking options in his squad. The Argentine coach has repeatedly praised the striker’s qualities and appears to view him as central to Atlético’s plans.

The situation has therefore developed into one of the major transfer stories of the summer, with Barcelona pushing for a player Atlético consider indispensable.

For now, Simeone’s message is clear: Atlético Madrid do not intend to sell Julián Álvarez during the current transfer window, despite the growing interest surrounding the Argentine forward.
