A British Foreign Office minister has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands after Argentine President Javier Milei intensified his government’s claim to the disputed South Atlantic territory.

Foreign Office Minister Kirsty McNeill told lawmakers on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, that there was “no doubt” about Britain’s commitment to the Falkland Islanders, their democratic rights and the UK’s sovereignty over the islands.

“There can be no doubt about our commitment to the Falkland Islanders, their democratic rights and the UK’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands,” McNeill said.

The latest dispute follows comments by Milei last week in which he threatened sanctions against oil companies involved in drilling around the Falkland Islands. His government has continued to press Argentina’s longstanding claim over the territory, which Buenos Aires calls the Islas Malvinas.

Tensions increased further after U.S. President Donald Trump said on August 31 that Washington was reviewing its traditionally neutral position on the Falkland Islands. The development prompted renewed attention to the longstanding sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina.

McNeill said Britain had made its position clear to Washington and expressed confidence in U.S. support for the islanders.

“The U.S. is our closest ally. They, too, are in no doubt about our unwavering support for the islanders,” she told lawmakers.

The Falkland Islands have been under British administration since 1833, while Argentina continues to assert sovereignty over the territory. The dispute led to the 1982 Falklands War between Britain and Argentina.
