Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United in a major transfer that strengthens the Premier League champions’ midfield ahead of the new season.
The 28 year old Brazil international has joined Arsenal on a four year contract with an option for an additional year, with the transfer reported to be worth about £75 million.
Guimarães arrives at Arsenal after more than four years at Newcastle, where he established himself as one of the club’s most influential players and eventually became captain. His departure represents a significant change for Newcastle, particularly after the midfielder played a central role in the club’s recent rise.
The Brazilian midfielder joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 and quickly became an important figure in the team. During his time at St James’ Park, he made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals, while helping the club secure the League Cup in 2025.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is expected to use Guimarães’ experience, defensive strength and ability to contribute in attack as the club prepares to defend its Premier League title and compete in Europe.
The midfielder brings considerable Premier League experience to an Arsenal squad that already possesses a strong collection of midfield options, including Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino.
Guimarães said he was excited about joining Arsenal and described the move as the right opportunity for a new challenge at this stage of his career. He also expressed his desire to win trophies and make history with the north London club.
His move to Arsenal ends a long association with Newcastle, where he became a popular figure among supporters. The midfielder’s departure comes during a period of considerable change at the club, which has also seen several other important figures leave.
Newcastle sporting officials acknowledged that Guimarães’ departure was not part of their original plans but said the transfer was handled after the player made clear his desire to pursue a new challenge.
For Arsenal, the signing represents one of the most significant moves of their summer transfer campaign. The club sees Guimarães as a player capable of adding greater physicality, creativity and defensive quality to its midfield.
His versatility is also expected to give Arteta more tactical options, allowing the manager to adjust his midfield combinations depending on the opposition and demands of different competitions.
The transfer comes as Arsenal prepare for another demanding campaign after winning the Premier League title. The club will be expected to compete strongly on domestic and European fronts, increasing the need for depth and experience throughout the squad.
Guimarães is also expected to bring leadership qualities to an Arsenal dressing room competing at the highest level. His previous experience as Newcastle captain and his international career with Brazil could prove valuable as the London club seeks to maintain its position among England’s leading teams.
For Newcastle, meanwhile, replacing a player of Guimarães’ quality will be a major priority. The Brazilian had become one of the club’s most important midfielders since arriving in England and was regarded as a key part of their recent success.
The completion of the transfer marks the end of a significant chapter for Guimarães at Newcastle and the beginning of a new challenge at Arsenal.
With the new Premier League season approaching, attention will now turn to how quickly the Brazilian midfielder adapts to Arteta’s system and whether his arrival can help Arsenal strengthen their bid for more major trophies.
