Former Abia State Governor and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu faces a strong opposition challenge ahead of the 2027 presidential election, describing the current opposition as weak and uncoordinated.
Kalu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said Tinubu’s performance in office and political structure have positioned him strongly ahead of the next election cycle. He argued that opposition parties have yet to present a formidable alternative capable of challenging the ruling party.
The former Senate Chief Whip stated that the President’s reforms and policies would continue to shape public perception ahead of 2027, adding that the administration’s efforts in areas such as economic transformation and infrastructure development would strengthen its support base.
His comments come amid growing political activities as parties and potential candidates begin preparations for the 2027 general elections. Various opposition figures and groups have been holding consultations, while political alignments continue to emerge across the country.
Kalu’s remarks have, however, attracted reactions from political observers who note that election outcomes are often influenced by several factors, including economic conditions, public sentiment, party organisation and the ability of candidates to connect with voters.
Opposition parties have continued to criticise some policies of the Tinubu administration, particularly those relating to economic reforms and the impact of rising living costs, while the government maintains that its measures are aimed at achieving long term economic stability.
As political discussions around 2027 intensify, analysts expect increased competition among major parties, with alliances and candidate choices likely to play a major role in determining the direction of the election.
