Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has launched a new weekly feeder service to the Lekki Deep Sea Port, a move expected to improve cargo connectivity, enhance supply chain efficiency and expand Nigeria’s access to international shipping markets.

The new service is designed to provide regular and reliable cargo movement between Lekki Port and major transshipment hubs, enabling importers and exporters to move goods more efficiently while reducing transit times and logistics costs.

Industry stakeholders said the introduction of the weekly feeder service marks another milestone in the development of Lekki Deep Sea Port as a strategic maritime gateway for Nigeria and the West African sub region.

According to MSC, the service will strengthen the integration of Lekki Port into the global shipping network, offering customers greater flexibility, improved scheduling and seamless access to international trade routes.

Maritime experts noted that increased vessel calls and enhanced connectivity will boost the competitiveness of Nigeria’s ports by attracting more cargo traffic and encouraging greater participation by international shipping lines.

The development is also expected to support exporters by providing more efficient channels for moving agricultural produce, manufactured goods and other commodities to overseas markets, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s non oil export drive.

Stakeholders believe the service will stimulate economic activities around the Lekki corridor, create employment opportunities and improve the efficiency of the country’s maritime logistics ecosystem.

They further called for sustained investment in port infrastructure, customs automation, road connectivity and cargo handling facilities to maximise the economic benefits of the expanded shipping service.

Analysts observed that improved maritime connectivity is essential to lowering trade costs, enhancing regional competitiveness and positioning Nigeria as a leading logistics and commercial hub in Africa.

The launch of the weekly feeder service underscores growing confidence in Lekki Deep Sea Port’s capacity to support larger volumes of international trade while advancing Nigeria’s ambition to become a major player in global maritime commerce.
