No fewer than 1,500 farmers in Kano State have received improved fertiliser under an agricultural support programme aimed at boosting crop yields, enhancing food production and strengthening food security across the state.
The initiative is designed to provide farmers with quality farm inputs ahead of the planting season, enabling them to improve productivity while reducing the cost of agricultural production.
Officials overseeing the programme said the improved fertiliser contains enhanced nutrient content tailored to support healthier crop growth, improve soil fertility and increase harvests for smallholder farmers.
They noted that access to quality fertiliser remains a critical factor in achieving higher agricultural output, particularly as farmers contend with rising input costs and the effects of changing weather patterns.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the intervention, saying the support would help improve their farming activities, increase yields and boost household incomes during the current farming season.
Agricultural experts observed that timely distribution of improved farm inputs is essential to achieving national food security objectives and reducing dependence on food imports.
They also stressed the importance of complementary measures such as access to improved seedlings, mechanised farming equipment, irrigation facilities and affordable agricultural financing to sustain growth in the sector.
Stakeholders urged governments and development partners to expand similar programmes to reach more rural farmers, noting that increased support for agriculture would enhance rural livelihoods, create employment and stimulate economic growth.
The intervention forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural value chain by improving farmers’ access to modern inputs and encouraging higher levels of productivity across key food producing regions.
Analysts believe sustained investment in agricultural support programmes will play a vital role in increasing food production, stabilising food prices and promoting long term economic resilience.
