The Niger State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited for the development and implementation of a comprehensive Gas Master Plan aimed at accelerating industrialisation, boosting investment and expanding access to clean energy across the state.

The agreement marks a significant step in the state’s efforts to harness its abundant natural gas resources to drive economic diversification, attract industries and create sustainable employment opportunities. The Gas Master Plan is expected to provide a strategic framework for gas production, transportation, processing and utilisation, positioning Niger State as a major hub for gas-based industries.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago described the partnership as a landmark initiative that aligns with his administration’s vision of transforming Niger State into an industrial and investment destination. He said the collaboration with NNPC would unlock the state’s economic potential by encouraging private sector participation and supporting infrastructure development.

According to the governor, the Gas Master Plan will serve as a roadmap for developing industries powered by natural gas, including manufacturing, agro-processing, fertiliser production and power generation. He noted that improved energy availability would enhance productivity, lower production costs and strengthen the competitiveness of businesses operating within the state.

Officials of NNPC said the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to supporting subnational governments in leveraging Nigeria’s vast gas reserves to promote industrial development and economic prosperity. They explained that the initiative complements the company’s broader Gas Master Plan, which seeks to increase domestic gas utilisation, expand infrastructure and position natural gas as the backbone of Nigeria’s industrial transformation.

The plan is expected to identify priority gas infrastructure projects, investment opportunities and policy measures required to stimulate industrial clusters, improve energy security and encourage the establishment of gas-based enterprises across Niger State. It will also support cleaner energy solutions while reducing dependence on more expensive fuel sources.

Industry analysts believe the agreement could significantly improve the state’s investment profile by attracting domestic and foreign investors seeking reliable energy for industrial operations. They noted that expanding gas infrastructure would not only create jobs but also strengthen local value chains and increase internally generated revenue.

The MoU comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to utilise its vast natural gas reserves as a catalyst for economic growth under the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative. Stakeholders believe stronger collaboration between NNPC and state governments will play a vital role in advancing industrialisation, enhancing energy security and promoting long-term economic development.
