Hosts Morocco and neighbours Algeria will renew one of North Africa’s fiercest football rivalries on Thursday when they clash in a crucial Group A encounter at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, with both sides looking to maintain their winning starts and move closer to the knockout stage.

The highly anticipated contest comes after both nations secured convincing victories in their opening fixtures, leaving the group leadership up for grabs ahead of what promises to be one of the standout matches of the group phase.

Morocco announced their title ambitions with an impressive 4-0 victory over Kenya in their opening game, stretching their unbeaten run to 10 matches in all competitions. The Atlas Lionesses have now won four of their last five outings and appear to be building momentum as they pursue a maiden WAFCON crown on home soil.

Head coach Jorge Vilda has seen his side develop into one of Africa’s strongest teams after consecutive runners-up finishes, and another victory would strengthen Morocco’s bid to finally lift the continental trophy.

Algeria also opened their campaign in style, defeating Senegal 2-0 to continue their reputation as one of the tournament’s most disciplined defensive teams. The victory marked another clean sheet for Farid Benstiti’s side, who have remained difficult to break down since their impressive performances at the previous edition.

However, the Foxes now face their toughest assignment yet against a Moroccan attack that looked sharp and clinical in its opening outing.

Although Algeria have enjoyed the better of recent meetings between the two sides, losing only once in their last six encounters, Morocco claimed a convincing 2-0 victory the last time they met in an international friendly in 2020.

With a place in the quarter-finals within touching distance and valuable momentum at stake, Thursday’s encounter is expected to produce another thrilling chapter in the long-standing rivalry between the neighbouring nations.

Beyond qualification for the knockout rounds, both teams are also seeking to strengthen their chances of securing one of Africa’s qualification places for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, making the outcome of the contest even more significant.
