The government of Chad has announced plans to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing the institution of having limited and uneven effectiveness.
The decision was announced on Monday in a statement by a government spokesman, who said it followed an in depth review of the court’s operations since it began functioning in 2002.
According to the statement, the review found that the ICC’s effectiveness remained limited and varied significantly across different regions.
“This decision is the result of an in-depth review of the functioning of the International Criminal Court since it began operating in 2002, as well as its record whose effectiveness remains limited and uneven across different regions,” the spokesman said.
The announcement adds Chad to the growing list of African countries that have expressed dissatisfaction with the ICC and its handling of international criminal justice.
The development could further fuel debate over the court’s role, effectiveness and relationship with African nations.
