The Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) has donated 5,000 tree seedlings to Redeemer’s University as part of efforts to promote environmental conservation, afforestation and sustainable development.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging tree planting and increasing awareness of the importance of protecting the environment, particularly among students and members of the university community.
The donation is expected to contribute to the expansion of green spaces within the university environment while supporting efforts to combat environmental degradation and the effects of climate change.
Tree planting remains an important strategy for improving air quality, protecting biodiversity, reducing soil erosion and enhancing the resilience of communities against the impacts of climate change.
The partnership between FRIN and Redeemer’s University also highlights the role of educational institutions in promoting environmental sustainability and encouraging young people to become actively involved in conservation initiatives.
Through the planting and nurturing of the seedlings, members of the university community are expected to gain greater appreciation of the importance of forests and trees to human well-being and sustainable development.
Environmental stakeholders have continued to call for increased investment in afforestation and reforestation programmes across Nigeria, citing the need to address deforestation and other environmental challenges.
The donation by FRIN is therefore expected to support broader national efforts to increase tree cover and promote responsible environmental management.
The initiative also provides an opportunity for students and staff to participate in practical conservation activities while contributing to a healthier and more sustainable campus environment.
With continued collaboration between research institutions, universities, government agencies and communities, stakeholders believe that tree-planting initiatives can play a significant role in strengthening environmental protection and building a greener future for Nigeria.
