Ukraine’s efforts to recruit more soldiers for its war against Russia are increasingly being met with resistance, with recruitment officers facing violent confrontations as public fatigue over the prolonged conflict deepens.

Military mobilisation teams across Ukraine have reported a growing number of assaults, threats and confrontations while attempting to enforce conscription orders. The incidents reflect mounting strain on a country that has been at war since Russia’s full scale invasion began in February 2022.

“Everyone’s afraid to die,” one Ukrainian man told Reuters, describing the fear that has spread through communities as authorities intensify efforts to replenish frontline troops after more than three years of fighting. Many eligible men say they support Ukraine’s defence but fear being sent into some of the war’s most dangerous battles.

Recruitment officers have reportedly been attacked in several cities, while videos circulating on social media show heated confrontations between conscription officials and civilians. Ukrainian authorities say some of the footage has been manipulated or amplified by Russian propaganda, but acknowledge that tensions surrounding mobilisation have increased.

The Ukrainian government has defended its recruitment campaign, saying additional troops are essential to replace battlefield losses and maintain the country’s ability to resist Russian advances. Officials have urged citizens to fulfil their military obligations, arguing that national survival depends on sustaining the armed forces.

Military analysts say Ukraine faces a difficult balancing act between maintaining sufficient troop numbers and preserving public support for mobilisation. The prolonged conflict, mounting casualties and uncertainty over the duration of the war have made recruitment increasingly challenging despite continued Western military assistance.

Human rights organisations have called for transparency and respect for legal procedures during mobilisation, while stressing that all recruitment efforts should comply with Ukrainian law and international human rights standards.

As fighting continues across eastern and southern Ukraine, the struggle to recruit new soldiers has emerged as one of Kyiv’s most pressing domestic challenges, underscoring the heavy human cost of Europe’s largest armed conflict since the Second World War.
