Indian authorities have banned a planned march to Parliament by members of the protest movement known as the “Cockroach” activists, setting the stage for a possible confrontation with demonstrators who have vowed to press ahead with the rally.
Police in New Delhi denied permission for the march, citing concerns over public safety, traffic disruption and security around Parliament. Authorities have imposed restrictions in parts of the capital, deployed additional security personnel and warned that anyone attempting to violate the ban could face arrest.
Organisers of the protest condemned the restrictions, saying the march was intended to draw attention to grievances over government policies and what they described as growing restrictions on civil liberties. They accused authorities of attempting to suppress peaceful dissent and said demonstrators were considering alternative ways to make their voices heard.
Police officials said the security measures were necessary to maintain public order and protect key government institutions. Barricades were erected along major roads leading to Parliament, while surveillance was increased in central New Delhi ahead of the planned demonstration.
The protest movement, popularly referred to as the “Cockroach” activists, has attracted attention through its unconventional tactics and criticism of government policies. Supporters say the movement represents ordinary citizens seeking greater accountability, while critics accuse it of provoking unrest and disrupting public life.
Rights groups have urged both authorities and protesters to exercise restraint, stressing the importance of protecting the right to peaceful assembly while maintaining public safety. Political analysts warned that any clash between demonstrators and police could further intensify political tensions in the world’s largest democracy.
The standoff comes as India prepares for a new parliamentary session, with opposition parties expected to raise several contentious issues, including civil liberties, governance and economic challenges.
