Spain’s triumphant FIFA World Cup campaign has dramatically reshaped the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal emerging as the frontrunner for football’s most prestigious individual honour.

The Barcelona winger has surged to the top of the latest Ballon d’Or rankings following a series of outstanding performances that helped Spain lift the World Cup trophy. His creativity, decisive goals and maturity beyond his years were instrumental in La Roja’s successful campaign, strengthening his credentials to become one of the youngest players ever to win the coveted award.

Yamal’s rise reflects a remarkable year for the 19-year-old, who has continued to establish himself as one of world football’s brightest talents. His exploits for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team have earned widespread acclaim from fans, pundits and former players, many of whom believe he has done enough to lead the Ballon d’Or race.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi occupies second place in the latest rankings after another memorable World Cup campaign. Although Argentina fell short of retaining the title, Messi once again demonstrated his enduring class by inspiring his side to the final and finishing among the tournament’s leading goalscorers.

England captain Harry Kane is ranked third following an impressive season for club and country, while 2025 Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé sits fourth after maintaining his influence for France throughout the World Cup.

French forward Kylian Mbappé, who finished as the tournament’s Golden Boot winner, is fifth despite another prolific campaign, highlighting the depth of competition among this year’s leading contenders.

Completing the top 10 are France winger Michael Olise, England midfield duo Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, Norway striker Erling Haaland and Georgia star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, all of whom enjoyed outstanding seasons at club or international level.

While the Ballon d’Or considers performances across the entire football season, Spain’s World Cup triumph has significantly boosted Yamal’s chances of claiming the award. His performances on football’s biggest stage have added considerable weight to an already impressive campaign, placing him in a commanding position ahead of the final voting.

The Ballon d’Or winner will be determined through votes cast by an international panel of journalists, who assess players based on individual performances, team success and sporting excellence over the course of the season.
