A court has dismissed an application seeking to amend a suit challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Magama/Rijau constituency, paving the way for the substantive matter to proceed.

The ruling came during proceedings in the ongoing legal dispute over the outcome of the party’s primary election, with the court holding that the request to alter the originating processes could not be granted at this stage of the case.

The suit, filed by aggrieved parties, challenges aspects of the APC primary conducted for the Magama/Rijau constituency, with the plaintiffs seeking judicial intervention over the party’s candidate selection process.

Following arguments from counsel representing the parties, the court declined the application to amend the suit, maintaining that the case should continue based on the existing filings before it.

The judge subsequently adjourned the matter to July 22 for the continuation of hearing, directing all parties to be prepared to proceed with the substantive issues before the court.

Legal observers say the ruling narrows the focus of the proceedings, allowing the court to concentrate on determining the merits of the primary election dispute rather than addressing procedural amendments.

The case is one of several pre-election disputes arising from party primaries ahead of upcoming elections, reflecting the increasing resort to the courts by aspirants seeking redress over internal party processes.

Political analysts note that the outcome of the suit could have significant implications for the APC’s candidate in the Magama/Rijau constituency, depending on the court’s final determination.

As the hearing resumes on July 22, attention will be on the arguments and evidence to be presented by both the plaintiffs and the defendants, with stakeholders closely monitoring the proceedings for a decision that could shape the party’s electoral preparations in the constituency.
