The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding productive electricity access across Nigeria as part of efforts to stimulate rural economic growth, empower small businesses and improve livelihoods in underserved communities.

The agency said access to reliable electricity remains one of the most critical drivers of economic development, particularly in rural areas where millions of entrepreneurs and small scale businesses continue to face challenges caused by inadequate power supply.

According to the REA, its productive use of energy initiatives are designed not only to provide electricity but also to ensure that rural communities can leverage the power supply to increase productivity, create jobs and strengthen local economies. The programmes focus on supporting businesses such as agro processing centres, tailoring shops, welding workshops, cold storage facilities, grain mills and other micro, small and medium enterprises that depend on electricity for daily operations.

The agency noted that by connecting rural businesses to sustainable electricity through renewable energy solutions, entrepreneurs are able to reduce operating costs, extend business hours and improve the quality of goods and services they offer. This, it said, contributes to increased household incomes and broader economic development across rural communities.

REA explained that productive electricity access forms a key component of the Federal Government’s strategy to close Nigeria’s energy access gap while promoting inclusive economic growth. Through solar mini grids, standalone solar systems and other clean energy technologies, the agency continues to electrify communities that are beyond the reach of the national grid.

Officials said reliable electricity is transforming rural economies by enabling farmers to preserve agricultural produce through cold storage facilities, process crops locally and reduce post harvest losses. The improved access also supports healthcare facilities, educational institutions and digital services, creating a more conducive environment for sustainable development.

The agency added that partnerships with development finance institutions, private sector investors and international development partners are helping to accelerate the deployment of clean energy infrastructure across the country. These collaborations are expected to attract additional investments into Nigeria’s rural energy sector while supporting innovation and local manufacturing.

REA further stated that productive electricity programmes are creating employment opportunities for technicians, engineers, installers and local entrepreneurs involved in renewable energy value chains. The agency believes the continued expansion of these projects will strengthen rural resilience and reduce poverty by unlocking new economic opportunities.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that access to affordable and dependable electricity remains a major constraint for many rural businesses. They argued that expanding productive energy solutions would improve business competitiveness, enhance agricultural value chains and encourage investment in rural communities.

As Nigeria continues its drive towards universal energy access, the Rural Electrification Agency says it remains focused on delivering sustainable power solutions that not only illuminate homes but also serve as a catalyst for enterprise development, job creation and long term economic prosperity across the nation’s rural landscape.
