The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has accused some tertiary institutions of engaging in unethical practices that undermine the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme, including delaying or refusing to refund students whose tuition fees had been paid before loan disbursements were made.
In a statement, NELFUND also raised concerns over reports that some institutions had arbitrarily increased tuition and other charges, warning that such actions defeat the purpose of the student loan initiative aimed at expanding access to higher education.
The Fund’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, said the scheme was established to remove financial barriers to education, not create additional burdens for students. She disclosed that NELFUND is engaging the affected institutions and relevant authorities to ensure eligible students receive due refunds.
The Fund further stressed that institutional charges must remain fair, transparent, and consistent with the objectives of the programme, warning against practices capable of eroding public confidence in the initiative.
NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to protecting students’ interests and preserving the integrity of the Federal Government’s flagship education financing programme.
