Real Madrid produced a stunning late comeback to defeat AS Roma 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday, scoring three times in the closing stages after falling two goals behind in a dramatic UEFA Champions League encounter.
Roma appeared firmly in control after building a 3-1 advantage, but Madrid fought back to snatch victory through late strikes from Carlos Espí, Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger.
Marten de Roon opened the scoring for the hosts in the 20th minute with a deflected effort that wrong-footed goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Kylian Mbappé restored parity five minutes later, giving the visitors hope of taking control.
Roma, however, came out strongly after the interval, with Donyell Malen scoring in the 51st and 57th minutes to put the Italian side 3-1 ahead.
Madrid struggled to contain Roma’s attacking threat for much of the match, but their late changes transformed the contest.
Espí pulled one back in the 83rd minute before Endrick equalised just two minutes later, completing a remarkable recovery and putting pressure on the home side.
Rüdiger then delivered the decisive blow in the 90th minute, completing Madrid’s comeback and securing all three points in a thrilling finish.
The result denied Roma a memorable home victory despite Malen’s brace and De Roon’s early contribution. For Madrid, the dramatic turnaround underlined their resilience and the impact of their substitutes when the match appeared to be slipping away.
The seven-goal encounter provided a memorable Champions League spectacle, with Madrid turning near-defeat into a remarkable away triumph.
