The service began operating on October 13, 2026, introducing a new competitor to established ride-hailing platforms Uber and Lyft. The company plans to deploy an initial fleet of 500 electric vehicles and employ 500 drivers to serve customers across Los Angeles County and into neighbouring Orange County.
Green SM will use VinFast VF 8 electric SUVs for its operations. Customers can book rides through the company’s mobile application, call its hotline or hail vehicles directly on the street. The service has not yet received approval to operate at Los Angeles International Airport.
Unlike Uber and Lyft, which largely rely on independent contractors, Green SM employs its drivers directly as full-time workers. The company also owns and maintains its vehicles, giving it greater control over fleet management and service standards.
The launch expands Green SM’s international operations to its ninth market, following its presence in several Asian and European countries, including Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Kazakhstan, Denmark and the Netherlands.
The US expansion also provides an opportunity for VinFast to increase the visibility of its vehicles in the American market, where the Vietnamese automaker has faced challenges establishing a stronger commercial presence.
Green SM’s performance in Los Angeles will depend on its ability to attract customers, maintain competitive fares and manage operating costs in a market dominated by established ride-hailing companies.
