China Offers to Deepen Trade Cooperation with EU to Strengthen Economic Stability

China has expressed its willingness to work with the European Union to strengthen economic cooperation and maintain stability in bilateral trade relations, as both sides navigate tensions over market access, tariffs and industrial competition.

The statement, reported on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, signals Beijing’s interest in maintaining economic engagement with one of its largest trading partners despite disagreements over trade policies and the treatment of Chinese businesses in Europe.

China and the EU have faced growing friction over several industries, particularly electric vehicles, where European officials have raised concerns about Chinese government subsidies and their impact on competition. Beijing has opposed EU trade measures targeting Chinese manufacturers, warning that restrictions could damage commercial relations.

Both sides have significant economic interests at stake. China remains an important market for European manufacturers, while European countries rely on Chinese suppliers for a range of industrial goods, electronics, batteries and renewable energy equipment.

Stronger cooperation could help businesses on both sides manage uncertainty, sustain investment and reduce the risk of further trade disputes. However, progress will depend on whether Beijing and Brussels can address their differences over market access, subsidies and the competitive position of domestic industries.

The relationship also carries wider implications for the global economy, as prolonged trade tensions between major economic powers can disrupt supply chains and influence investment decisions.

China’s latest statement indicates an interest in dialogue, although concrete progress will require practical agreements rather than diplomatic assurances alone.
