Lagos-based cycling group Velong Community is promoting cycling as a platform for youth development, mentorship and leadership, following a partnership discussion with D.T. Autocafe in Lekki Phase 1.
A 28-member delegation from the Fadeyi-based group met the company’s Chief Executive, Dayo Adeola, to explore ways of expanding cycling opportunities and mentorship programmes for young Nigerians.
The group’s lead coordinator, Engineer Femi Thomas, said cycling helps young people develop essential qualities that extend beyond sports.
“Cycling teaches patience, teamwork, and resilience. These are the very qualities we are instilling in our young people to prepare them for leadership,” Thomas said.
Velong Community has evolved from a small gathering of cycling enthusiasts into a structured mentorship initiative. Through weekly rides and workshops, the group has introduced more than 200 young people to cycling while exposing them to civic responsibility and entrepreneurship.
“We are building more than cyclists; we are building leaders,” Thomas added.
The group stressed that access to safe riding spaces and private-sector partnerships would be vital to expanding its activities and reaching more young people.
Adeola commended the initiative and pledged continued support for grassroots youth development.
“This visit aligns with our goal of empowering the next generation through practical skills, mobility, and opportunity,” he said.
He disclosed that D.T. Autocafe plans to provide logistical assistance and dedicate space at its Fadeyi workshop for bicycle maintenance training, creating opportunities for young people to acquire vocational skills.
The proposed support is expected to strengthen the group’s outreach and connect cycling with practical career development.
Velong Community said its next group ride is scheduled for November as it continues efforts to use cycling to promote discipline, community engagement and leadership among young Nigerians.
