Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed a suspected Lakurawa militant during a security operation in Soruro village, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The operation took place at about 5 a.m. on Monday after troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Binji received a distress call reporting the presence of armed men in the community.
The soldiers reportedly mobilised to the area and engaged the suspected militants, resulting in the death of one suspect, while other members of the group fled.
Items recovered during the operation included an AK-47 rifle, a magazine and ammunition.
The Sokoto State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the incident, explaining that six armed men had invaded Soruro village and attacked a resident identified as Dikko Abubakar, who was killed.
According to the police spokesperson, the other attackers escaped after the incident, while security operatives recovered the weapon and ammunition.
The operation comes amid continued military and security efforts to tackle terrorism and banditry across Sokoto State and other parts of Nigeria’s North-West region.
Security agencies continue to rely on intelligence and information from residents to identify armed groups and respond to threats against vulnerable communities.
