African civil society organisations and trade unions are launching a continent-wide campaign from October 12 to 18, 2026, to demand publicly funded, affordable water services and stronger government accountability in water management.
According to a report by The Guardian Nigeria, the campaign is being organised by the Our Water Our Right Africa Coalition (OWORAC) as part of the sixth Africa Week of Action Against Water Privatisation, under the theme, “Reclaiming Africa’s Water Future: Public Water for All.”
The campaign aims to address challenges facing public water systems across Africa, including inadequate government investment, deteriorating services, climate pressures and the expansion of water privatisation. Organisers are advocating transparent management, democratic control of water resources and equitable access to safe and affordable water.
A key highlight will be the unveiling of a position paper on implementing the Africa Water Vision 2063, with proposals to strengthen public financing, accountability and community participation in water governance. Activities will also include media engagements, community dialogues and a webinar on prepaid water meters.
