British heavyweight Moses Itauma will return to the ring in January with Ben Davison remaining in his corner despite criticism following the first defeat of his professional career.
Promoter Frank Warren confirmed that Itauma is expected to face a less demanding opponent next time, while his existing training team will remain in place.
The 21-year-old suffered his first professional loss against Filip Hrgovic at London’s O2 Arena on August 29, when the vacant IBF heavyweight title was at stake.
Itauma dominated the early stages and dropped Hrgovic in the second round but faded badly as the fight progressed. Davison eventually threw in the towel in the ninth round before Itauma was taken to hospital.
The bout was the first time Itauma had gone beyond six rounds and left his professional record at 14 victories and one defeat.
Warren said the team held a meeting to assess the loss and determine the way forward, with the decision taken to retain Davison and the rest of the coaching staff.
“He is staying with Ben and the team. That is where he is at. You have got to judge him now on his results,” Warren said.
The promoter also defended Davison, accepting responsibility for approving the Hrgovic fight.
Warren pointed to Anthony Joshua’s decision to continue working with Davison ahead of his December clash with Tyson Fury as evidence of the trainer’s ability.
Meanwhile, Hrgovic became Croatia’s first heavyweight world champion with his victory over Itauma and is expected to make his next appearance in January.
IBF mandatory challenger Frank Sanchez, who stepped aside to allow the Hrgovic-Itauma bout, is now expected to receive his title opportunity early next year.
