Lead City University pulled off one of the biggest results at the 15th West African University Games in Ile-Ife after defeating African champions University for Development Studies of Ghana 1-0.
The victory handed UDS their first defeat of the competition and significantly boosted Lead City’s hopes of progressing from Group B.
UDS had entered the encounter on the back of an impressive 4-2 victory over Afe Babalola University, establishing themselves as early contenders after producing a strong attacking display.
However, Lead City adopted a disciplined approach and frustrated the Ghanaian champions throughout the contest. A solitary goal proved enough to secure all three points for the Nigerian university.
The result represented a dramatic turnaround for UDS, who had scored four goals in their opening match but were unable to find the net against a resolute Lead City defence.
While ABUAD managed to breach UDS’s defence twice in their opening encounter, Lead City went a step further by keeping the Ghanaian side scoreless and capitalising on their opportunity.
The defeat leaves the Group B race finely balanced, with UDS unable to build on their impressive start and Lead City gaining valuable momentum in the battle for a place in the knockout stages.
For the Ghanaian champions, the result provides an early test of their ability to recover from disappointment, while Lead City’s performance has announced their credentials against one of the tournament’s strongest sides.
The men’s football competition now promises an intriguing battle for qualification as the WAUG continues in Ile-Ife.
