The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to pay outstanding salary arrears owed its members, warning that failure to comply could lead to an indefinite strike.
The union issued the ultimatum after its 56th National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from September 30 to October 1, 2026.
SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, said the union was demanding the immediate payment of arrears arising from the implementation of the 2026 Federal Government and SSANU agreement and the Consolidated University Teaching and Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure, CONTTA, which took effect from January 1, 2026.
The union said implementation of the agreement remained incomplete and uneven across universities due to funding and administrative challenges.
SSANU also demanded payment of two months’ salaries withheld during the 2022 industrial action, as well as one year arrears arising from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases.
Ibrahim said some universities had implemented the new salary structure using internally generated funds because of the absence of direct Federal Government funding.
He warned that failure to meet the demands within 14 days would compel the union to embark on a total and indefinite strike without further notice.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has reportedly assured the union that the outstanding funds would be released on or before the following week, which could avert the planned industrial action.
