Kenya has confirmed its first case of Ebola after a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo arrived in Nairobi on Saturday and later died, Health Minister Aden Duale said.
Duale said health authorities have identified 28 people who had contact with the patient, including family members and healthcare workers. Officials are monitoring the contacts as part of efforts to prevent further transmission.
The case is linked to a major Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where more than 8,000 cases and over 4,000 deaths have been recorded. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, was declared in May.
The outbreak has also spread to Uganda, which recorded 20 cases and two deaths before the World Health Organization declared the country free of Ebola in August.
Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, including those who have died. Symptoms can include fever, vomiting and diarrhoea, while severe cases can lead to internal and external bleeding.
