Birmingham City are facing concerns over the fitness of Nigeria international Bright Osayi-Samuel after the defender withdrew from the Super Eagles squad with an undisclosed injury.
Osayi-Samuel was ruled out of Nigeria’s international friendly against Russia after picking up the problem while on duty with the national team.
The 28-year-old had featured for the full 90 minutes in Nigeria’s 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on September 29 before his withdrawal was announced.
The exact nature and severity of the injury remain unclear, leaving Birmingham waiting for further medical assessment before determining how long the defender could be unavailable.
Osayi-Samuel has established himself as Birmingham’s preferred right-back this season after initially facing questions over his place following an inconsistent debut campaign.
His improved performances have earned him a regular starting role and made him an important part of the Championship side’s plans.
The potential absence therefore represents a concern for Birmingham, although the club have a recognised replacement in Ethan Laird who can step into the right-back position if required.
Osayi-Samuel’s versatility has also provided Birmingham with additional options, with the Nigeria international capable of operating in both defensive and wide roles.
The club’s medical staff are expected to conduct further examinations to establish the extent of the injury and determine his rehabilitation timeline.
The Super Eagles will also be monitoring his condition, particularly as Nigeria continues preparations for its upcoming international commitments.
Birmingham will hope the injury proves minor and that Osayi-Samuel can return quickly without suffering a prolonged spell on the sidelines.
