The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged extortion involving a dispatch rider who claimed he paid N20,000 to police officers attached to the Makinde Divisional Headquarters.
The investigation followed the circulation of a video showing the officers stopping the rider during a stop and search operation. The rider reportedly used a hidden camera to record the encounter without the officers’ knowledge.
According to reports, the officers searched the rider and his delivery bag before taking his motorcycle to their station. The rider alleged that he was subsequently asked to pay N20,000 before his motorcycle was released.
The Lagos Police Command confirmed that the officers involved had been identified as personnel attached to the Makinde Division.
The command said the officers had reported at its headquarters on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, and were being interviewed as part of the investigation.
However, the police said the alleged N20,000 payment had not been independently confirmed.
The command assured members of the public that the investigation would establish what transpired and that appropriate action would be taken against any officer found culpable.
The development comes amid renewed concerns over allegations of police extortion and misconduct in Lagos.
