European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has accused Russia of increasing hybrid attacks, sabotage attempts and airspace violations across Europe, warning that the activities are putting lives at risk.
Speaking in Brussels on Monday, October 5, alongside Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, Kallas said Russian missiles and drones had again entered Moldovan airspace over the weekend. She described the repeated violations as unacceptable.
Her warning comes after Russia carried out a major air campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on September 30. Moldova’s defence ministry said three drones crossed into its airspace during the attacks.
Germany has also raised concerns about what its officials describe as an expanding Russian campaign involving drones, cyberattacks and sabotage. German authorities have linked Russia to an attempted drone attack at Leipzig airport in August, although Moscow has rejected accusations that it is conducting such operations against European countries.
The latest warnings come as European governments strengthen efforts to coordinate responses to hybrid threats, including attacks that fall below the threshold of conventional military aggression.
Kallas’s comments add to growing concern among European governments that the war in Ukraine is creating security risks beyond Ukraine’s borders, particularly through airspace violations, cyber operations and suspected sabotage.
