The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) has mapped communities considered vulnerable to flooding and designated temporary shelters as part of measures to protect lives and property during the ongoing rainy season.
KADSEMA’s Public Relations Officer, Philips Dominic, said the agency had identified communities close to major rivers and tributaries, as well as low-lying areas with inadequate drainage systems.
Among the areas identified as highly vulnerable are Rafin Guza, Bashama, Unguwan Rimi, Barnawa, Kabala Costain and Romi. Parts of Tudun Wada, Rigasa and Sabon Tasha were also identified as vulnerable because of their low-lying locations and obstructed drainage channels.
The agency said it had strengthened its early-warning system by issuing daily advisories based on weather and hydrological forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.
KADSEMA also disclosed that temporary shelters had been designated across the state. The Namadi Sambo Skills Acquisition Centre in Tudun Wada will serve as a temporary shelter in Kaduna South, while Romi Primary and Secondary School has been designated for residents of Romi.
The agency said relief and non-food items had already been positioned at warehouses and zonal offices across the state for rapid deployment when necessary.
KADSEMA urged residents in vulnerable communities to take evacuation warnings seriously and cooperate with emergency officials.
