The North-East Governors’ Forum has urged President Bola Tinubu to revive oil exploration activities that were previously commenced but later stalled in Magumeri and Gubio Local Government Areas of Borno State.
The governors made the call at the 13th regular meeting of the forum held in Maiduguri, Borno State. The meeting brought together representatives from the six North-Eastern states to discuss security, economic development and regional cooperation.
Speaking on behalf of the forum, Borno State Governor and chairman of the North-East Governors’ Forum, Babagana Zulum, commended the Federal Government for renewed efforts to revive exploration at the Kolmani Oil Field in Bauchi State.
Zulum said the revival of oil exploration could create jobs, stimulate infrastructure development and expand the revenue base of states and host communities.
He urged the Federal Government to extend the same attention to Borno, particularly the areas where exploration activities had previously been suspended.
The governor said responsible exploration and development of the state’s natural resources could complement ongoing reconstruction efforts, strengthen local economies, restore livelihoods and create sustainable opportunities for residents.
The governors also stressed the importance of renewed exploration in the Lake Chad Basin as part of efforts to diversify the North-East economy and accelerate development in the region.
The forum said greater investment in the region’s natural resources should go alongside security improvements and other development initiatives.
