The North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has called on the Federal Government to resume oil exploration activities that were previously commenced but later stalled in Magumeri and Gubio Local Government Areas of Borno State.
The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the forum’s 13th meeting held in Maiduguri, Borno State, on October 3, 2026.
The governors welcomed renewed federal attention to oil exploration at the Kolmani field in Bauchi State, describing the development as an opportunity to create jobs, stimulate infrastructure development and expand revenue for states and communities in the region.
The forum, however, urged the Federal Government to extend similar attention to Borno’s stalled exploration activities, particularly in Magumeri and Gubio.
The governors also called for broader exploration across prospective areas of the North-East, including the Lake Chad Basin, as part of efforts to diversify the regional economy and create sustainable opportunities.
They further stressed the importance of responsible development of the region’s natural resources in supporting reconstruction, strengthening local economies and improving livelihoods.
The forum’s position forms part of its broader agenda for regional economic development, infrastructure expansion and improved cooperation among the six North-East states.
