Switzerland’s Economy Minister Guy Parmelin will step down from the country’s seven member Federal Council at the end of 2026, ending more than a decade in the national government.

Parmelin, who currently holds Switzerland’s rotating presidency, announced his decision on Friday at a press conference. He will turn 67 next month.

A member of the right wing Swiss People’s Party, Parmelin has led the Economy Ministry since 2019. He was first elected to the Federal Council in December 2015.

His departure will lead to a change in Switzerland’s governing cabinet as the country prepares for federal elections scheduled for October 2027.
