The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has expressed anger over the cancellation of a planned two million man march organised by the Obidient Movement in support of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso in Uyo.
The state police command directed political parties and groups to reschedule rallies and processions planned for October 1, citing security concerns and insufficient manpower to manage the expected crowd.
The State Director of the Obidient Movement, Benjamin Smith, said organisers had spent more than N20 million mobilising supporters across the 31 local government areas of the state.
Smith alleged that the cancellation came after the police had earlier engaged with the organisers regarding the planned march. He also accused the authorities of frustrating the event and said the movement would not accept similar cancellations in the future.
The police, however, maintained that the decision was based on security concerns, including the possibility of clashes with other political activities scheduled for the same period.
Smith urged supporters to remain law abiding, adding that a new date for the march would be communicated.
The development has generated renewed debate over political rallies, public safety and the right to peaceful assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
