Spanish former energy executive Amparo Moraleda became Airbus’ chair on October 1, replacing René Obermann, who stepped down from the board. She is the company’s first female chair and the first chair from outside its traditional Franco-German leadership base.
The changes come ahead of a decision on whether Faury, who became CEO in 2019, will receive another term. His current mandate runs until April 2028, but people familiar with the company expect the board to begin examining the succession issue as early as April 2027.
Lars Wagner, who became CEO of Airbus’ commercial aircraft division in January, is widely viewed by people familiar with the company as a potential successor if Faury steps down. Wagner previously led MTU Aero Engines.
Airbus also appointed ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet to the board and selected Michelin CEO Florent Menegaux to succeed Jean-Pierre Clamadieu as a non-executive director at next year’s annual meeting.
The leadership decision will come as Airbus prepares major strategic choices, including the development of future aircraft and engine technologies.
