Ukraine has launched a fresh strike on an oil facility in Russia’s Samara region as fighting between the two countries intensifies, with Russian attacks continuing to target Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes against Russian strategic sites were aimed at weakening Moscow’s ability to sustain its war effort. The latest attack comes despite pressure from the United States to avoid strikes on energy infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Russia continued its aerial campaign against Ukraine. A Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv on Thursday, damaging the building and starting a fire, although officials said there were no casualties because children had been moved to shelters.
The latest escalation follows a major Russian assault on Ukraine’s power network that killed at least seven people and forced emergency electricity cuts in Kyiv and surrounding areas. Ukrainian officials have warned that Moscow is preparing for an intensified campaign against energy infrastructure as winter approaches.
Tensions have also grown between Russia and NATO, with alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte saying NATO sees no imminent threat to its territory but remains prepared to respond to any Russian aggression.
