Nokia and Finnish satellite company ICEYE are partnering to develop secure, sovereign low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications systems for governments and defence contractors.
The systems will support missions including defence, border security, emergency services and disaster response. The companies said the technology will provide high-performance, low-latency broadband connectivity while allowing nations to retain control of their satellites, ground infrastructure and user terminals.
The partnership combines ICEYE’s satellite and constellation capabilities with Nokia’s secure networking technology. The companies said the systems are designed to complement existing terrestrial and satellite networks, particularly when conventional communications infrastructure is disrupted or unavailable.
The first communications satellites from the partnership are expected to launch in 2028, positioning the companies to compete in the growing sovereign satellite communications market alongside systems such as SpaceX’s Starlink.
